As a young man, U. S. Army Sgt. Charles R. Reilley of Nevada would receive the Distinguished Service Cross for Extraordinary Heroism in Battle Against an Armed Enemy during World War I in Belgium. He would later become the Chief of the Marin County Fire Department.
