American Distilling company Fire in North Sausalito - May 4, 1963
The American Distilling Company suffered a large fire that destroyed two of their large buildings on Saturday night, May 4, 1963. Initial estimates recorded a loss of $2.5 million dollars in liquor and structures, plus the loss to government taxes on the liquor. By the following Wednesday the loss had been scaled down to $550,000, which was still a record for fires in Sausalito historically. The Sausalito City Council congratulated the FD for their work at this fire, along with a $75,000 blaze earlier in the day at the home of Dr. Sigurd Von Christenson on Cloud View Road. The Council also approved the plans for a $45,000 snorkel truck that night, and authorized City Manager Charles Brown to seek bids. Coming soon - more information on the FD response and mutual aid.
