The 53rd annual installation dinner for the Marin County Fire Chiefs Association was held at Jason's in Greenbrae on March 18th. A special presentation on lessons learned from the San Bernardino active shooter incident in December of 2015 was given, featuring former San Bernardino City Fire Chief Tom Hanneman and Nurse Educator/EMS Coordinator Carly Crews. Both volunteered to make the trip north and give the presentation. The presentation was titled the "Waterman/IRC Incident, Mass Shooting Multi-Casualty Response Terrorist Attack, San Bernardino City Fire Department."
Fire service icon Chief Ronny J. Coleman traveled west from Elk Grove to attend with his wife Marie. Ronny conducted the traditional swearing in ceremony for the incoming Association officers, including for the sub-sections of Prevention and Operations/training. Incoming MCFCA President Mark Mills of Ross Valley FPD opened the dinner with a moment of silence in memory of the 343 fallen FDNY firefighters from the 2001 World Trade Center attack, and in memory of our own fallen members. Special guests were introduced, including retired Kentfield Chief John Lando and his wife Signe, retired Sausalito Chief Stephen Bogel and his wife, retired Kentfield Chief Paul Smith and his wife, retired Rincon Valley and Central Sonoma FD Chief Doug Williams, and retired Healdsburg Chief and current Santa Rosa JC Fire Technology Director Randy Collins.
Outgoing Presidents were recognized and thanked, including MCFCA President Mark Heine from Novato FPD, Prevention Section Reuben Martin from Ross Valley FPD, Training Section Graham Groneman from Marin County FD, and Matt Windrem from the Operations Section.
Incoming officers were installed as follows:
MCFCA: President Mark Mills, Chief of Ross Valley FPD; Chris Tubbs, Vice President, Southern Marin FPD; Tom Welch, Secretary, Mill Valley FD; and Scott Shurtz, Treasurer, Larkspur and Corte Madera FD's.
Operations & Training Section: Dan Mahoney, President, Ross Valley FD; Steve Ardigo, Secretary, Tiburon FD .
Prevention Section: (2nd year of 3-year terms) Reuben Martin, President, Ross Valley FPD; Lynne Osgood, Vice President, Novato FPD; Ryan Boykin, Secretary, Southern Marin FPD; and Rob Bastianon, Treasurer, Ross Valley FPD.
The perpetual Tom Forster Leadership Award was given to Battalion Chief Michael "Mike" St. John of Mill Valley FD, in recognition for his regional efforts and strong leadership in many areas, including leading the Marin County Search and Rescue Team for the Marin County Sheriff's Office.
